If you want to work in the game industry you NEED a portfolio. Don't have one? No sweat. Here's how you build a shmexy one in less than 2 months.

A games portfolio is typically a list of the top games you have worked on, links to play those games, and information on what you contributed to those projects.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Surya's Incredible Example Portfolio:

Here are my quick and dirty steps on how you can make one in no time...

  • - Start by learning your Tech Stack --

If you're unsure where to start, learn to use the tech. I have found that the following three tech tools are universally important.

๐ŸŽฎ Learn the Game Engine, I recommend Unity:

โœจ Learn Source Control, I recommend Git:

๐Ÿ“ˆ Learn ticketing software, I recommend Trello:

  • - Next build 1-2 Solo Projects --

I want you to spend some time building a game or two in the actual engine. Keep these STUPID small (Flappy Bird, Galaga, etc) and work alone. And *TIMEBOX* each one to just a few days. Remember, these are just for practice.

Now join 2-3 48 hour game jams

Hiring managers want you to have worked in teams. Find a short (48 hour) game jam that suites your fancy and a few team members via the forums and then FINISH a game together. Publish that game to itch.io and boom, you have your first portfolio game. Then do it again.๐Ÿฅ‰

  • - Next join 1-2 long form game jams--

Now that you're comfortable and probably have a few people you work well with, I want you to join a long form game jam. I find that 2 weeks or so is a great upgrade from the 48 hour jams.

  • - And now, build your portfolio -

By the time you get here, you should have at least 1 solo project, at least 2 48 hour games, and at least 1 bigger game.

I want you to take your *top 3 best games* and build a portfolio out of them. You can use Wix to do this easily. Do NOT add more than three games. Quality over quantity, and remember to mimic Surya's example portfolio above.

And that's it! This is all achievable, with literally 0 experience, in less than 2 months. Your portfolio MATTERS. So take some pride in it, and make it one that the recruiters will talk about for years to come!
